The announcement that Underwood would perform “America the Beautiful” at the ceremony on January 20 immediately dismayed anti-MAGA fans of the country superstar. While those who support Trump and are fans of Underwood cheered the decision, this vocal contingent were furious, and made their anger known.
Underwood has never been open about her political beliefs, telling an interviewer in 2019 she tried to stay “far out from” expressing them. In a statement to People, Underwood made no mention of politics or her personal beliefs, referring to the performance instead as an act of patriotism.
